AI Girlfriend Chat: Companion Apps and How They Work

An AI girlfriend chat is a conversation with a virtual character powered by a language model: it remembers context, adapts to your style and answers in a set role. Such services are called AI companions. They can be free or paid, text-only or with voice, images and video, and most of the serious questions are not about the chatting itself but about billing, privacy and age restrictions.

This guide covers the categories of services, how they work and what they charge for, the data risks to weigh, the 18+ rules, and what it all means for creators building their own AI characters. It is a neutral overview: no explicit descriptions and no tools that "undress" other people's photos.

How an AI companion works

Nearly every service follows the same design. A language model generates the replies, and on top of it sits a character card: name, personality, speech style, backstory and an opening message. To keep a conversation coherent, the service stores part of the history (memory) and feeds it into each new request. The longer and better the memory and the stronger the model, the pricier the plan. Extras usually include:

• image generation for the character's looks;
• voiced replies and voice calls;
• video and animated avatars;
• group chats and public character catalogs.

One thing to keep in mind: the other side is a program. It does not remember you the way a person does, and it can get facts and conversation details wrong. Treat it as interactive fiction, not as a source of health, money or relationship advice.

Categories of services

The first three categories are built for users; the last one is for people who earn from a character. Detailed reviews of two popular services: CrushOn AI and Candy AI.

Pricing models

Almost everywhere, "free" means a limit: messages per day, a weaker model, short memory, ads. The paid side is built like this:

• Subscription. Monthly or yearly; longer terms lower the monthly price but are paid upfront. Candy AI Premium costs about $13.99 a month, while CrushOn AI paid plans start at roughly $5.99.
• Tokens and credits. Spent on images, video, voice, or on each reply from an advanced model. This is the main reason real spending exceeds the subscription price.
• One-time packs. For example, a chat extension for advanced models. Usually non-refundable.
• Gifts to creators. Users buy an in-app currency and give it to the character's creator.

Before paying, check three things: what the plan actually includes, how to turn off auto-renewal, and whether refunds are possible. Refund terms often depend on the payment route (Apple, Google or direct).

Privacy and data safety

Your chats are personal information, and the service processes them on its own servers. A 2024 Mozilla Foundation review (Privacy Not Included) examined 11 romantic chatbots, and all of them received a privacy warning label. In 2025 Italy's data protection authority fined the developer of Replika 5 million euros, citing the lack of a legal basis for processing data and of reliable age verification.

Practical rules:

• do not write your real name, address, workplace, documents or payment details;
• register with a dedicated, non-disposable email: some support teams cannot restore throwaway accounts;
• read the privacy policy: what is stored and how to delete your account and data;
• do not upload other people's photos or pictures of acquaintances;
• do not reuse a password from another service.

A separate topic is tools that "undress" or face-swap photos of real people. Creating intimate images of a person without consent is banned by major platforms and prosecuted in a number of countries, so such tools are not covered here.

18+ rules and user age

Many companions include adult sections and keep them behind a separate toggle. The rules repeat the same points: 18+ content is for adults only, and characters who look under 18 are prohibited. For example, the CrushOn AI help center explicitly bans such characters and any child sexual abuse material. How strictly age is checked varies, and regulators are paying more attention: since November 24, 2025, Character.AI has blocked open-ended chats with bots for users under 18.

If you are a parent or teacher, remember that a formal "I am 18" button does not protect a teenager. If you are a creator, never build characters who look underage, and never publish 18+ material outside platforms designed for it.

The emotional side

Companions are designed to be pleasant to talk to, and the service benefits when you come back. That is a legitimate product as long as you know the limits: do not replace real-life contact with it, do not take its advice on health or finances, and do not overpay for a feeling of a special bond. If chatting starts to crowd out sleep, work or people close to you, take a break and limit your time.

What it means for creators

The AI character market is made of creators as well as users. There are two routes.

1. Publishing characters in catalogs. You get an audience and sometimes gifts, but withdrawals are not available everywhere: at CrushOn AI, according to its help pages, they are planned for the future.
2. Your own AI account on a subscription platform. Fanvue allows fully AI accounts with clear labeling and owner verification, and OnlyFans terms say AI-generated content must be captioned with a signifier such as #ai or #AIGenerated.

How to choose a service: checklist

• Is there a free period to test dialogue quality in your language?
• What does the plan include, and what is paid in tokens?
• How do you cancel auto-renewal, and are refunds possible?
• What does the privacy policy say about storing and deleting chats?
• Are there clear 18+ rules and a ban on underage-looking characters?
• If you are a creator: can you withdraw earnings, and what may you do with generated images?
