Patreon for Creators: Rules, Fees and Payouts
Patreon is a global membership platform. Here are its fees, payout methods and Adult/18+ rules, plus what to check before launching from your country.

Important. Platform terms change. Before signing up, check the current rules, fees and payout availability for your country.
Patreon is a global platform where creators earn recurring income from members. New creators start on a standard 10% platform fee, plus payment processing and payout fees. Adult content is allowed only in the Adult/18+ category, with age verification, written consent from participants and a paywall. Here are the terms to check before you launch.
How Patreon works
You create a page, set membership tiers and publish posts, some public and some for paying members only. Beyond memberships there are digital product sales, live events and podcasts. Fans pay by card or PayPal, and Patreon tracks earnings and sends payouts.
It suits artists, podcasters, musicians, writers and game developers. For adult creators it is a stricter option than dedicated platforms like OnlyFans, with a wider audience that is used to paying for memberships.
Patreon fees
According to Patreon's help center, the platform fee ranges from 5% to 12% depending on plan; creators who joined after August 4, 2025 are on the standard 10% plan. Processing fees and, where relevant, currency conversion and payout fees are added.
| Cost | Amount per Patreon's help center |
|---|---|
| Platform fee | 5-12% depending on plan; standard plan is 10% |
| Payment processing (card, Apple Pay, payments over $3) | 2.9% + $0.30 |
| Micropayments (tiers of $3 or less) | Separate, higher processing rates |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% when a member pays in a currency other than your payout currency |
| PayPal payout | 1% (minimum $0.25, capped at $20); $10 minimum payout |
| Payoneer Wallet payout | $1 per payout; $25 minimum |
| Bank transfer via Payoneer (outside the US) | $0.50 to a USD account, or $0.25 + 1.55% to local currency |
| US direct deposit (Stripe) | $0.25 per payout |
Rates depend on the fan's payment method, location and your payout currency, and older pages may still be on legacy plans. Check the Plan details and fees pages in your account because they change.
Worked example
A $10 membership paid by card on the standard plan: about $1.00 goes to the platform and card processing is roughly $0.59 (2.9% + $0.30). That leaves about $8.41 in your balance, before the payout fee of your chosen method. If the member pays in a different currency, add 2.5%. These figures are illustrative.
Payouts
- Methods. US creators use bank transfer through Stripe. Creators elsewhere can use bank transfer via Payoneer in supported countries, PayPal, or a Payoneer Wallet.
- Holds. Adding or editing a payout method triggers a 5-day hold on your balance. New creators have the same hold from their first payment.
- Timing. Payouts usually arrive in 1 to 5 days and can be requested once every 24 hours. Automatic payouts run on the 5th of each month.
- iOS purchases. Funds from App Store purchases stay pending for up to 75 days.
Patreon publishes the eligible countries and currencies in its "Payouts guide for creators outside of the US". Check your country there before you commit, because it determines your available methods and fees.
Adult/18+ content rules
Patreon allows Adult/18+ work under strict rules:
- Age verification. Creators in the Adult/18+ category verify their age with an ID photo and a selfie, handled by a third-party provider, a payment-processor requirement.
- Consent. You must hold written consent from every real adult who appears in your work and keep it indefinitely; a payment partner may ask for it.
- Paywall. Nudity or sexually explicit material must sit behind a paid membership. Public areas, including avatar, banner, tier descriptions, shop previews and free posts, must be free of nudity.
- Limits. Sexual activity between real or hyperrealistic participants is not permitted, and illustrated or animated work follows separate rules requiring characters to be clearly adult. Depictions of non-consent are also prohibited.
- AI. Stylised AI-generated work is allowed within the rules; hyperrealistic work must use real adults with documented consent.
If your page has no nudity or explicit material, you can switch it to "Safe for All Audiences" and skip age verification. Violations can lead to removed products and account restrictions. Read the current Community and Commerce guidelines, and note that adult content availability varies by country.
Checking availability in your country
Patreon's Terms exclude people located in or ordinarily resident in countries under comprehensive US sanctions, and payout options differ by country. Before you launch, confirm in the help center that your country is eligible for payouts and for Adult/18+ content. If you serve a Russian-speaking audience, Boosty is a common companion platform; see the Boosty page.
